Use this Australian income tax calculator to estimate annual resident income tax, the Medicare levy, total tax and after-tax income. Select an income year and enter annual taxable income in Australian dollars.
The result is a guide only. Your final ATO assessment can differ because of deductions, offsets, Medicare rules, HELP/SL debt and other circumstances.
How to use the Australian income tax calculator
- Select the Australian income year you want to estimate.
- Enter your annual taxable income in Australian dollars (AUD). Taxable income is generally assessable income after allowable deductions; it is not necessarily the same as gross salary.
- Review the estimated income tax, Medicare levy, total tax, effective tax rate and annual after-tax income.
The calculator is designed for an individual Australian resident for tax purposes. It is not the correct calculator for a foreign resident or a working holiday maker.
What the Australian calculator result means
- Income tax — the estimated tax calculated using progressive resident tax brackets for the selected income year.
- Medicare levy — an estimate based on the individual low-income threshold and phase-in rules stored for that year.
- Total tax — estimated income tax plus the estimated Medicare levy.
- Effective tax rate — total estimated tax divided by annual taxable income. This is different from the marginal rate applied to the last part of your income.
- After-tax income — annual taxable income less estimated income tax and Medicare levy.
The estimate does not include the Medicare levy surcharge, family thresholds, Seniors and Pensioners Tax Offset rules, private health insurance adjustments, tax offsets, HELP/SL repayments, deductions not already reflected in taxable income, or other individual circumstances.
Australian income tax example for 2026-2027
For an Australian resident with annual taxable income of $100,000, the 2026-2027 rates produce estimated income tax of $20,520. Adding an estimated $2,000 Medicare levy gives total estimated tax of $22,520 and annual after-tax income of $77,480. The effective total tax rate is 22.52%. This example assumes the ordinary 2% Medicare levy applies and no offsets, surcharge, exemptions or other adjustments are relevant.
Current Australian resident income tax rates
Australian income years run from 1 July to 30 June. These are marginal resident income tax rates and do not include the separate Medicare levy.

Australian income tax calculator FAQ
Should I enter gross salary or taxable income?
Enter annual taxable income. If you only know your gross salary, the estimate may be useful as a guide, but your taxable income can be lower after allowable deductions or differ because of other assessable income.
Does this calculator include the Medicare levy?
Yes. It estimates the ordinary Medicare levy, including the individual low-income threshold and phase-in range supported by the calculator data. It does not calculate family thresholds, exemptions or the Medicare levy surcharge.
Can foreign residents or working holiday makers use this calculator?
No. The current interface is resident-only. See the separate foreign resident tax rates and working holiday maker tax rates.
Does it calculate weekly, fortnightly or monthly take-home pay?
No. It calculates an annual estimate. Payroll withholding can differ because employers use pay-period tax tables and may account for declarations, tax codes and other deductions.
Sources and scope: Rates were verified 27 August 2026 against the ATO individual income tax rates and ATO Medicare levy guidance. This calculator is an informational estimate, not tax advice.
