New Zealand income tax calculator

Use this New Zealand income tax calculator to estimate annual individual income tax, the ACC earners’ levy, total tax and levy, and after-tax income. Select a tax year and enter annual taxable income in New Zealand dollars.

The result is a guide only. Your final IRD assessment or PAYE deductions can differ because of tax codes, credits, secondary income, KiwiSaver, student loans and other circumstances.

How to use the New Zealand income tax calculator

  1. Select the New Zealand tax year you want to estimate.
  2. Enter your annual taxable income in New Zealand dollars (NZD). Use income for the full tax year from 1 April to 31 March.
  3. Review the estimated income tax, ACC earners’ levy, total deductions, effective tax rate and annual after-tax income.

The calculator is designed as an annual estimate for an individual with one income source. It is not a full PAYE, payroll or tax-return calculation.

What the New Zealand calculator result means

  • Income tax — the estimated tax calculated using progressive individual income tax brackets for the selected tax year.
  • ACC earners’ levy — the levy estimated at the applicable annual rate up to the maximum liable-earnings cap.
  • Total tax and levy — estimated income tax plus the ACC earners’ levy.
  • Effective tax rate — total estimated income tax and ACC levy divided by annual taxable income. This is different from the marginal rate on the last part of your income.
  • After-tax income — annual taxable income less estimated income tax and ACC earners’ levy.

The estimate does not include secondary tax codes, tailored tax rates, tax credits, independent earner tax credit, student loan repayments, KiwiSaver contributions, child support, Working for Families, schedular-payment rules or other individual adjustments.

New Zealand income tax calculator FAQ

Should I enter gross salary or taxable income?

Enter annual taxable income for the selected tax year. Gross salary can be used for a rough estimate when it represents your only taxable income and no adjustments are required.

Does this calculator include the ACC earners’ levy?

Yes. It applies the selected year’s ACC rate up to the annual maximum liable-earnings cap.

Does it include KiwiSaver, student loans or tax credits?

No. These are separate from the income tax and ACC estimate and depend on your personal circumstances.

Can I use it when I have more than one income source?

The calculator is intended for one annual income amount and does not apply secondary tax codes. Add all taxable income only for a broad year-end income-tax estimate; PAYE withheld from each source may differ.

Why might the result differ from my payslip or IRD assessment?

Employers calculate PAYE by pay period and use the tax code you provide. Rounding, secondary income, tax credits, KiwiSaver, student loans and other deductions can make payroll and final IRD results different from this annual estimate.

Sources and scope: Rates were verified 27 August 2026 against the IRD individual income tax rates and IRD ACC earners’ levy rates. This calculator is an informational estimate, not tax advice.
